- The Hannya mask (般若) is one of the most recognizable masks in traditional Japanese Noh theater. It represents a woman who has transformed into a jealous, vengeful demon due to obsession, heartbreak, or unrequited love. Today, beyond the theater, the Hannya mask is an incredibly popular motif in traditional Japanese tattooing (Irezumi) and modern streetwear, often used to symbolize warding off evil spirits or representing a complex duality of pain and anger.
